Eric Carpano, Professor of Public Law, was elected President of Jean Moulin Lyon 3 University at the board of governors meeting on Monday 7 December 2020, in the first round of voting, by unanimous vote (25 votes FOR, 8 abstentions). He took up his post on 1 January 2021.

During the central council elections held from 12 to 16 November, the list “For a democratic and humane university” led by Eric Carpano obtained 57.14% of the votes in college A of the board of governors (professors and equivalent) and 55.91% of the votes in college B (other teaching staff) against the list led by Pierre Girard, current dean of the Faculty of Languages. These elections were marked by an exceptional turnout (more than 98% in college A and almost 94% in college B), which affirms the importance of the vote and the vitality of the University’s democratic process.

The list “For a democratic and humane university” was elected as an alternative project to the merger initiated in the context of the IDEX Excellence Initiative, and “aims to rebuild a modern, sustainable and responsible university, based on the values of democracy, humanism, solidarity and excellence”, indicated Eric Carpano in his oath of office (in french).

During the board of governors meeting on 7 December 2020, Eric Carpano thanked the former management team and the central services of Jean Moulin Lyon 3 University for their work over the past years. He emphasised that the new majority came from a variety of disciplinary and political backgrounds and that it intended to govern collegially and with a view to bringing people together.

“On taking office, the elected representatives and the new presidential team will have to make decisions on the reforms that are currently raising legitimate fears within the world of higher education and research. Thanks to the support shown by fellow professors, administrative staff and students during the election of the president by the board of governors, the new team will begin work on 1 January 2021, using all the room for manoeuvre that exists to collectively build a new university that reflects the ideals and values of its actors” declared Eric Carpano.
